I teach in a rural county in Alabama with one high school and three outlying middle schools which has never had a music/ band program in over 25 years. The majority of these students come from low-income and single parent homes. My students are extremely motivated and talented and in need of assistance in obtaining instruments for the them to play. They are now given an opportunity to join a band program that had not been offered at their school. I currently have enrolled over 90 middle school students in beginner band and over 35 at the high school. With the procurement of these instruments they will learn lifelong skills, not just in music, but in all academics. Music has proven to help increase reading comprehension, math skills, leadership traits and teaches the skills to cohesively work with others. Music/band has a place for high risk students, autistic students and gifted students.
