Children who can see themselves in the books they read are far more likely to become lifelong readers. I have students who say that they don't like to read, but who would if they never saw someone like them going on amazing adventures or overcoming adversity? You don't hate reading, you just haven't found the right book. This is what I say anytime I hear someone say they don't like reading. I believe that there's a book out there for everyone, and everyone deserves to find that special story that will keep them reading forever. Independent reading and read alouds can both be used to encourage and inspire kids to keep reading and exploring and escaping to fantastic worlds that they might not have ever found without these books.
