These materials will be used for our unit on understanding photosynthesis and the systems of Earth. The Genes/DNA lab materials will be used during our heredity unit so that students get a real, hands-on experience of extracting DNA and using that extracted DNA to learn more about themselves and their families. In addition, the aquaponics system will allow my students to learn about aquatic ecosystems and how these differ from our own. I think allowing students to take responsibility for maintaining the aquatic ecosystem will also be a valuable lesson on sustainability.
