I can teach my students to read the word dog and associate it with a black and white picture of a dog, but what happens when they see a brown dog, is it still a dog? I can teach my students the meaning of a STOP sign by showing them a black and white picture, but will they make the connection when they see the bright red STOP sign on the corner? Students need to see the world in color. Without access to a colored printer in the classroom, this can be tricky. With access to a colored printer, I could offer my students real-world visuals that can not only keep them engaged but connect them to reality. I have also included a few math manipulatives. Math alone can be challenging. When you add a reading deficit it only becomes more challenging. The Power Pen and its corresponding card packs allow the students' relief from reading so they can focus on their math skills.
