By the time a student within our school district reaches the end of 5th grade, he or she would have been exposed to 1,080 days of school attendance and 291,600 hours of instruction. Now can you imagine how these numbers are impacted when a child is struggling with emotion regulation? Given the current situation we are faced with now, such as managing COVID, it is now more important than ever that each student's mental health and emotional well-being is addressed. Negative emotions can impact a child's educational progress and make academic struggles even worse. Consequently, there are times when children need access to a quiet and calm space. We now have a room for that specific purpose. We call it a Feelings Integration Time (FIT) room. The FIT room is a sensory-controlled calming area. It is a space geared towards helping children calm down while they learn self-regulation skills/strategies. As equally important, is an opportunity for students to express their feelings in an appropriate way and to be heard by the school based stakeholders. The research conducted by Dr. Kenneth Barish, Weill Medical College Cornell University shows that students benefit greatly from emotional regulation in a number of areas. Research shows students pay more attention, work harder and achieve more in school. Additionally, they are better able to resolve conflicts with their peers and show lower levels of physiological stress. This is one step in our commitment as stakeholders to engage students in the educational process to reduce barriers and accelerate academic, social and emotional growth of the students we serve.
