These books will get my students excited to read. It is widely accepted in literacy research that motivation and engagement are integral to reading development. Students do not improve at reading if they are not intrinsically interested in the material. We need to provide books that match students' interests and, in this case, are appropriate for their ages. Adolescents in high school should not be given texts that are designed solely for first or second graders. This is unfortunately too often the case in intervention settings and why it is so important we build a high-interest library that honors the students' maturity levels. To support my readers, I provide them the choice of what to read, planning the necessary interventions through their chosen interests. I determine what they want to learn about and compile a scaffolded text set surrounding that area of study. I give each student one-on-one instruction in reading strategies, word parts (morphology), vocabulary, fluency, and writing. As a result of high engagement and clear instruction, students accelerate in their reading skills!
