My students with disabilities have strengths and communication skills that range in a continuum. My students range from being in self-contained rooms to resource rooms to being fully mainstreamed in the general education setting. There can be a disconnect due to students in self-contained rooms and resource rooms not being in the same classes as those only in general education classrooms. This breakfast cart will give my students who work hard on improving their communication skills, a chance to connect with other students in the building. By providing a breakfast cart, students will learn real-life job skills such as social skills (greeting students and teachers and asking questions), managing and learning about money, and relationship building which will transcend into their adult-life and help them get employment upon graduation. "National employment studies, including a 30-year analysis by DuPont de Nemours, show that persons with disabilities have equal or higher performance ratings, better retention rates and less absenteeism" (un.org) and yet people with disabilities are two to three times more likely to be unemployed than others. With your help, we can work together to decrease that number and get ALL students working together.
