Kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and study skills that they will use throughout their schooling. Along with reading, writing, and mathematics, we also focus on their social and emotional development. Children entering their first years of regular schooling have to be prepared to interact with other children, control themselves, and cooperate with their peers. Skills like these cannot be learned without being given the opportunity to practice being autonomous and allowing students to see how their decisions affect themselves and others. Allowing children to make their own choices is the first step to encouraging autonomy. I would like to set up an environment where many choices are available. I provide choice through my lessons and in our classroom activities, and would love to be able to introduce a new set of seating to let the children decide whether that seating is a “good-fit” for them and their learning. Learning to use the seating responsibly as well as sharing it and taking turns is all part of the fun!
