My students receive special education support for disabilities that affect their success in their content-area classes. I co-teach 7th grade science and social studies, and also run support labs, where students can receive guided support with their assignments and projects, prepare for and finish tests, and also work on their IEP goals. My teaching strongly emphasizes reading skills, since a majority of what we do in the classroom involves reading. Most of my students are reading well below grade level, and this has a tremendous impact on their ability to be successful, and I strongly believe that bringing up their reading levels would have a profound impact on their behavior, mindset, and academic success at school. Mine is a medium-sized, semi-urban middle school in upstate New York. We serve a large percentage of racially and culturally diverse students that receive free or reduced meals.
