Flexible seating gives students the opportunity to make choices about their learning environment and create a since of ownership about their learning process. I like to use every possible inch of our classroom and try to figure out a way to make it more comfortable for my students. In first grade we try to promote the joy of reading and sitting upright at a hard desk is not ideal for young students. During independent reading and writing time I watch my students choose to sit on the ground under their desks, lay on their stomachs in the middle of the room and most commonly sit on the grass just outside our door in the shade. I would love to add comfort items such as cushions, yoga mats, and clip boards to help make these spaces more enjoyable. When students love where they are learning they will love to learn!
