As we approach September 11th, our nation reflects on a tragedy that changed the course of life as we know it. Teaching at the middle school, all of my students were not born when September 11th occurred. Alan Gratz's novel Ground Zero was recently published, and has been well received by students and teachers alike. His novel captures perspectives of children in Afghanistan and children in New York following the years after. While the book is amazing to read, it is my true belief that this book can help spark a joy in reading. It is my goal to teach about September 11th, while using Alan Gratz's Ground Zero as a focal point. By requesting ten books, I can help build a classroom set for the set to be used for years to come. Along with the books, there are composition book which will house student writing pieces as they reflect, and develop their writing skills over the school year. As the year progresses, students will be able to look back and see how their writing has grown.
