Social emotional learning is made up of five core competencies: self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, relationship skills and decision making. Our students experience poverty, dysfunctional family life, and intense academic expectations which affects their responses to everyday situations. Students come from multiple elementary schools in the division and are provided an intervention for 6 to 9 weeks. In order to teach the coping skills needed in the school environment, art provides an outlet for self expression and allows teachers to teach self regulation skills. Lets make a difference in these young minds and provide them with a solid foundation needed for everyday life.
