Dress for the job you want, not necessarily for the job you have. My students are just entering a commercial kitchen for the first time and want to become chefs, bakers, and cooks. Having some pride in personal appearance translates into a feeling of belonging and confidence that will help these students apply themselves to putting out their best effort. Kitchens can be dangerous places. Floors get wet and may have pieces of food on them. There are spills of hot liquids that lesser shoes would not protect them from. Wearing non skid shoes is a safety issue, allowing the student to dexterously negotiate through their environment.
