Phonemic awareness is ability to hear and manipulate the sounds in spoken words and the understanding that spoken words and syllables are made up of sequences of speech sounds. Although, these skills are essential on learning how to read, many phonics programs do not have a great emphasize on teaching and using these skills in application. Many Tier I phonics programs make the assumption that all students arrive to school already know how to rhyme, identify first, middle, last sound and syllables. However, that is not always the case. I would use these materials to foster my student's phonemic awareness and pre-literacy skills to prepare them to be successful readers.
