These books will transform my classroom library for my students. Books that are in my students’ first languages allow them to continue to develop literacy in their native language as well as English. Multicultural stories ensure that my classroom library reflects all of the students that enter my classroom. All students deserve to see themselves represented in the stories they read. Multicultural and first language books keep my library relevant to my students and their families, creating a sense of community and strengthening our school-home relationships. I can’t wait for my kids to bring Spanish, Portuguese, and Vietnamese books home to read with their families, or to watch them choose stories that reflect a wide range of cultural identities.
