I am requesting chess sets so students can reconnect with one another during our in-school club hour. Concerned about the disconnection students have felt over the past year, our school staff voted to enact a new one-hour period three days a week called ELO (Extended Learning Opportunity) to promote school culture and personal growth and enrichment. Students sign up for three different clubs or activities each quarter. One of my ELO periods is a "Walking Chess Club" that is allowing students to walk and talk on some days and to sit together and play chess on others. I have been enjoying witnessing the joy and connection that has happened as we've begun this ELO! Students are sitting face-to-face, talking, and using their brains, but they're doing so over borrowed chess boards and pieces that will soon have to be returned. We are hoping to have our own chess sets so students can continue to gather and enjoy this time together.
