Our students have entered back into the brick and mortar building for in-person learning. They have been away from their friends and teachers for an entire year, and they have missed out on socializing with their peers. Most students are experiencing anxiety over the events that have occurred during the 2020 and 2021 Covid-19 pandemic. It is making it difficult for them to function within the public middle school setting. They need an opportunity to relax, release, and rejuvenate. What better way to gain this than by allowing them to have some friendly competition among their peers. I have noticed that my students are struggling with self-awareness, problem-solving skills, coping skills, resilience, handling anxiety, friendship, and social and emotional skills within a classroom environment. Having a calming corner in my classroom will give me the chance to focus on each student's individual social-emotional needs within the classroom. These students are missing social skills that develop through human interaction. They are also struggling with their academics, and I do not want them to fall even further behind. Offering them the PlayStation 4 as a brain break and building block of social skills will help them them with positive interactions with others. It will also build their self confidence. This will be the avenue needed to help the "whole child" be successful.
