An understanding of geometric construction helps students grasp how geometry works. The ability to use a compass and straight-edge to create parallel lines, bisecting angles, create perpendicular, and ultimately create a perfect square, hexagon, and equilateral triangle give students a great deal of geometry knowledge in a fun and engaging way. Cheap compasses slip and break easily which leads to unnecessary frustration when doing something that should be enjoyable and enlightening. A high-quality compass helps students focus on the work instead of keeping a cheap compass from veering off the path during their work.
