My school district uses the Reading Workshop curriculum. Students are offered a wide range of books to read independently. We start each unit with an anchor text, then student chooses their books and create small groups or partners for reading. This is a great concept, but when there's a dearth of good options, students often just check out of reading. The Bluford Series makes struggling readers feel successful. They are written at a lower level, and audiobooks are available online for free. This gives students a chance to read independently. They love the drama and relatability of characters whose lives and pressures reflect their own. They do not want to read books that are outdated, too difficult, or too babyish. Ten-year-old characters living in an upscale community do not appeal to the majority of my thirteen and fourteen-year-old struggling readers. Having three complete sets of the Bluford Series will make my students feel that they are truly readers.
