Every day my class reads for 20-35 minutes directly after recess. We call it our R&R (Read and Relax) time. I asked them to describe this time in their own words and this is what they said: “We sit with our friends and practice reading. We feel interested and bubbly. We don’t want it to end. We are excited (especially if the book is action packed), intrigued, iguana, compelled, calm, relaxed, focused. We are silent and if you saw us reading you would have no choice but to sit down and join us.” They also wanted the donors to know that having better books would make their reading time better and that every book would be treated with love and respect. Lastly, they wanted to be sure you knew that not all of them have books at home and those students will be able to check out our donated books. Typically once students finish a book they write a recommendation on it and put it in our book reviews binder. The addition of new class library books will allow students to produce higher quality book reviews and critiques by increasing their engagement with the books. At the end of the day, we want to produce people who enjoy reading and can do so fluently. Do you remember the last time you were engrossed in a book? The last time it was impossible to think of anything else until you found out what happened next in your book? I want captivating books for my students so that they can become interested in books and their unique stories. If students are interested in books then they will be more likely to read. I want to be able to empower my students by providing books that are accessible and challenging.
