Our school is a disciplinary campus serving students in 9th through 12th grade. Many of these students come from low-income families with limited levels of education. These supplies will open doors for students. Cooking is an essential skill, which all students should know as they reach adulthood and independent life. In a kitchen, students can learn an abundance of skills ranging from team-building to measurements and conversions. This kitchen can be used to develop important job skills such as communication and collaboration. Additionally, it can be used to teach core subjects hands-on. For example, the students can develop writing skills by creating recipes, mathematics and science by using correct measurements and experiencing first-hand delicious chemical reactions, and social studies by learning about cultures and time periods that have affected the way we eat. More importantly, this kitchen can help students develop much needed personal skills such as creating a budget, learning about healthy diets, and providing for themselves and others. These skills can spark a student's interest in vocational training. This project can truly be a game-changer not only for our students but also for their families as they practice these skills at home. Student-created meals can also be used to provide for community members in need. It is crucial that we provide students with the tools and experiences to achieve their greatest potential and become productive, self-sufficient adults.
