This year, my students will be returning to a brand new building and will be the first feet to walk the halls, first hands to use the scissors, and first eyes to watch the whiteboard. We are so blessed to return to such an amazing space, however, right now the OT room is empty! I am a first year OT at Capitol Hill Montessori, and I'm eager to fill our blank canvas of a space with materials and resources to help my young friends enjoy OT, and get the most our of their sessions. OT is especially valuable for our young learners because it allows them time out of their traditional classrooms to engage in hands-on, holistic activities designed specifically for those students who struggle to learn effectively in the traditional classroom setting. OT helps our kiddos to master the skills they need to function in life and in the classroom, but fine-tuning the skills they need on a 1 on 1 or small group basis. In OT we work on hundreds of skills such as handwriting and fine motor manipulation (cutting with scissors, building with blocks, gripping a pencil), sensory integration (staying still while completing school work, feeling comfortable in school, staying awake, alert, and focused during the school day), social-emotional regulation (coping skills, processing feelings, effective expression and communication), and self care (tying shoes, zipping jackets, using the bathroom independently, simple meal and snack prep).
