These materials will make an immense difference in my students' learning. I chose three items that I thought would most benefit my students: a cash register, toy groceries, and a word family flip book. This past school year, while teaching students virtually, it became clear to me that I wasn't connecting what I was teaching them to their lives. In other words, I taught them how to count money, but didn't emphasize the importance of this skill in their every day lives. The cash register and toy groceries will help me do this. Similarly, the word family flip book will help me further build on students' reading skills while also making connections. For example, when my students learn to read new words or sound them out on their own, they may not make the connection that just changing the beginning sound(s) of the word turns it into a new word that they can read just as fluently. It is so easy for them to get anxious or discouraged about their reading skills. The flip book will help to boost their confidence and make them stronger readers.
