A classroom library and reading nook inspires students to pick out a book (of choice) and read. Children learn vocabulary, sentence structure, and many literacy skills by doing so. They learn to love books and reading.
After two years, I was finally able a to get a closet room that adjoins my small classroom painted. They painted it Lavender (because that was the left-over paint they had)-thus the name "The Purple Reading Parlor" came to me.
I teach K-5 English as a Second Language. Often, students complete their work early. Now they can be rewarded with picking out (and checking out for home reading-should they choose to do so) a book of choice and then they can nestle into the magic of story or the fascination of non-fiction.
My small classroom has no space for a Reading Nook, but now there will be The Purple Reading Parlor as a wonderful inspiring literacy and learning space (place)!
I have another DonorsChoose project for books and shelving. I also have a few boxes of books that I have collected that can now abide in The Purple Reading Parlor.
The walls are lavender. The floor will be covered in a purple rug. The purple curtain will divide the space from the classroom and the lavender bean bag chairs will be some of the seating.
