Engaging students with a variety of high-interest texts is a way to keep students interested and motivated. Student choice is also important in the literacy classroom. Through literature circles, students can have rich, thought-provoking discussions to aid in reading comprehension. Literature circles allow students to apply critical reading skills and have shown to be more valuable to students than only traditional reading instruction. Literature circles engage students through the use of high-interest short stories and novels. Literature circle texts can also include poetry, nonfiction articles, and trade books. When engaged in literature circles, students read a specific text and discuss content from the passage in a small group setting. Students have a choice regarding the text they are assigned to read. The texts are varied in genre and content area.
