Flexible seating and accessible reading areas allow students to take charge of their reading and make the choices that work best for them. During independent reading time, they can choose a location in the classroom that works best for them. Currently, my students are choosing to read at or under their desks or in one of our two flexible seating options. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating, especially when working to get them engaged with an independent reading book. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more excited about reading than when they are just sitting at their desk. My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to read. The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The barrel chairs will offer an enclosed and cozy space to read, and students can stretch out by using the ottoman. This mimics how you would read at home: in a comfortable chair, not at a hard table. The bookshelves will allow my books to be more easily accessed and displayed, encouraging students to browse books and find titles that interest them. I have seen how choice can positively affect my students reading habits and hope that the additional options will help us grow even more!
