I will be the first teacher to teach clay to these students in years. My eighth graders haven't had clay since at least fifth grade. I haven't had a single student who has had the opportunity to use the pottery wheel. The happiness I saw on their faces when I talked about clay projects on day one was so overwhelming, that I new I had to try to get them a pottery wheel! This pottery wheel would be used for at least 200 students between 6th and 8th grade, as well as my art club students. I have many kiddos already asking for lessons after school and asking if it is time for us to start clay yet! I am going to be adding the pottery wheel in alongside hand-building projects. This will also serve my students with sensory sensitivities well. In previous years when I have been at a school with pottery wheels, I had students with autism who greatly preferred the pottery wheel to hand building, and greatly excelled at it. Having the pottery wheel created a safe, calm space for them to come in and work without worry.
