For my students to achieve literacy it is vital that they have access to books that they can read independently both at school and home. My students are asked to read for at least 20 minutes at home each weeknight and complete a written reading response. They are able to "check-out" books from my classroom library and take them home. For my students that are literate in their first language (mostly Spanish), I try to encourage reading in their first language as well as English. Literacy in a first language supports literacy in other languages. It also provides an opportunity for parents to read with their children and foster a love of reading while nurturing the relationship. My students love our classroom library time. They recommend books to each other and talk about what they want to read next. They have also set goals for how many books they want to read this year and are tracking their progress. I've recently gotten requests for more Dr. Seuss books and Clifford books. I also have a need for more books on a lower reading level. Last year I gave away many books because school was virtual and students did not have books at home. This project will help me replenish my library and provide students with the books that they need and enjoy.
