These materials will first be used in the classroom to help the students understand how the lab tests are conducted and how to interpret the data. Students will then complete fieldwork at several locations along Herring Run, where they will use the chemical tests and turbidity tube to measure chemical factors of the stream, and the seine net to capture, identify and catalog macro-invertebrates that inhabit the stream. The abundance and diversity of macro-invertebrates, along with the pH, dissolved oxygen levels, nutrient levels and temperature, all help to assess the quality of the water. Students will then compile their data and use it to make recommendations. They will present their reports to the association, Friends of Herring Run.
