Part of our library class time always includes quiet, independent reading. Students do this for their own enrichment and for their reading practice. This kind of autonomy in choosing good-fit books that interest them empowers students to move through the stages of "learning to read" and then "reading to learn"--making reading for information and enjoyment a lifelong habit. Soft seating in a special area is an ideal incentive to make that reading time fun, comfortable and enticing! In addition to enhancing independent reading time, cushion seating will also be used to facilitate collaboration among students. We do a variety of activities in all the grade levels--PreK through 5th grade--and some of those include working together with partners or in small groups. The soft seating makes the group gathering easy to organize and enjoyable to sit on the floor.
