Our Catalyst Program is an RTI-inspired program which is designed to help students succeed in school and beyond by focusing on the social and emotional needs of our students. One of the components of our program is a school-based store which, with faculty oversight and mentoring, is completely student-run. It is designed to assist in students' development of several skills needed to succeed in the future work place. Students determine what items to sell, purchase the inventory needed, price the items and operate the store during its designated school hours. All profits made are dispersed in the form of grants to school-based clubs and organizations. Our next step to make this experience more authentic is to purchase a cash register with an inventory system which not only gives the students the "feel" of operating a commercial business, but also aids in the tracking of inventory. The time saved with a cash register (as opposed to a cash box) will free up more time for the students to focus on the business and philanthropical components of this program.
