Research shows that a warm, welcoming, cozy classroom helps support student sense of belonging and ultimately, achievement in school. Similar research shows that plants have numerous mental health benefits including reduced anxiety, depression, attention deficit recovery, enhanced productivity, and improved self-esteem (not to mention air purification benefits). Given the trauma that many students have faced in the last 18 months, creating a space that supports mental health should be of the utmost importance. Harsh fluorescent school lighting will be replaced by lamps and string lighting. Additionally, the plants will serve academic purpose as well considering that we are an Environmental Science classroom! Students will care for the plants themselves, and we will use the soil for soil quality experiments.
