Classroom libraries—physical or virtual—play a key role in providing access to books and promoting literacy; they have the potential to increase student motivation, engagement, and achievement and help students become critical thinkers, analytical readers, and informed citizens (NCTE, 2021). The books we receive will work to enhance the beginnings of a beautifully diverse classroom library as students return to the classroom this year. Every book that has been requested is one that I truly believe will be of interest to my middle school students based on conversations we have had about their favorite genres and current reading selections.
These books will be treated with care and will be read time and again. Students will be able to select them to read during their sustained silent reading time. With these new books my students will be able to choose from a variety of books which will not only be of interest to them but also enable them to build and rebuild their reading stamina, as well as build and strengthen their vocabulary. These books will also fortify their ability to empathize with others and perspective take as they experience new characters.
We know that the only way to improve reading ability is to keep reading and to do so at the appropriate grade level. Expanding my classroom library will help my students grow stronger in reading because they will find more and more titles that will both engage and challenge them. This project will enable them to have more access to and experiences with the printed word.
