My 5th graders get pumped when we make art that relates to their generation! The soft sculpture emoji project allows students to cut out and create their own emoji from felt. They even learn some simple sewing skills by stuffing and sewing their emoji. The whole class is making the happy face emoji when they show off their finished project!
After reading a fun book about robots, my first graders design their own robot by printing geometric shapes. The excitement builds in the second week when they use neon tempera cakes to add color to their robot. So many skills are bundled into this project (learning geometric shapes, learning to print with recycled objects, learning painting techniques), but the pride they show in their finished robot is what makes this project a success.
My third graders learn about birds that are common in our state. They choose one bird and practice drawing it. We then draw on quality watercolor paper, and they learn basic watercolor techniques to add color to their bird. Their favorite part is learning to add a watercolor wash to the background, watching colors flow to create a beautiful sunset effect.
