During pretend play children are gaining valuable skills they can use throughout their lives. When they set the table they are learning to count as well as one to one correspondence. When they are pretending to cook they are learning to read labels, and recipes, and also how to sequence. When they are pretending to shop they are writing and making lists and learning to count money. They are also learning social skills such as taking turns, sharing, appropriate communication, and problem solving. Dramatic Play might seem like a little thing or that it's not that important, but in fact it might be one of the most important things young children do during the day.
