Have you ever seen the sparkle in the eye of a child who has just come upon a "treasure" they found outside? Have you seen, heard, and felt their enthusiasm as they describe what they found and make guesses about what it could be? Only 5 days into the school year and my curious class has brought me leaves and beans from a tree on the playground. Their natural curiosity sparked an impromptu lesson where students used their scientific, observation skills, and their senses, to investigate what this tree could be. Their observations and notes lead to more questions, and research on the computer to find out what this tree was, and to find answers to their questions. As I searched my classroom for equipment to help them really observe closely the beans, bean pods, and leaves, I noticed all I had was a small bucket of very worn, broken, and scratched magnifying glasses. As I saw them so fully engaged, interested, and so self-motivated, I decided I want this kind of hands-on, engaging, experience in my class weekly. Having a stereomicroscope in the classroom will allow students an even closer look at the objects we are investigating. While others wait for their turn, the bug boxes and magnifiers will allow ALL students to participate and be engaged while waiting their turn. Whether studying the Science curriculum or, as in the case above, these supplies will help me foster a love of learning in my students by building on their natural curiosity.
