We all become better people when we care for someone else. My students will learn to care for animals and the environment through classroom pets. I already have a guinea pig named Atom, who has been in my science classroom for 5 years, and now I have gotten another one, and the little house is getting, well, too little. Through engaging with classroom pets students have an opportunity to learn how to care for pets. In addition, pets provide social-emotional support for students who struggle with behavioral and emotional issues. Some students will have an opportunity to bring Atom home for weekends and holidays, which will give them a chance to share with their family the skills they have learned.
