Literacy based instruction and hands-on activities are important to developing speech and language skills. Books are rich in speech and language opportunities. With a single book we can work on vocabulary, describing (ie. colors, size, shapes), sequencing, retell, speech sounds, grammar, social skills, perspective taking, inferencing, and the list goes on. Pairing literacy materials with hands-on activities allows for even greater reinforcement of speech and language skills. This year we are also putting a bigger focus on themed therapy units. Each week will center around a theme that is applicable to activities going on at school or out in the community. For example in the first weeks of school we will focus on back to school vocabulary and stories. Using themes that are familiar to each student helps make the skills we work on in the speech and language room all the more relevant to their school and community environment.
