While there definitely is a place for whole-class texts in the English classroom, it is also important to find texts that speak to students' needs and interests. These books will allow students to select texts that are engaging to them as we learn about literature and cinema techniques in class. This means that students will be more interested in what they are reading, and more likely to be successful in class. Student choice leads to increased engagement, which leads to improved educational outcomes. By providing choices to students, which they will use in literature circles with others from the class, we hope to avoid "fake reading" and those students who simply don't do the reading at all because they find it boring or too difficult.
