Flexible seating with the ball chairs or swivel stools allows students to concentrate on their work while having some movement. During independent work times, my students choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as: at their desk, sitting on the floor with clipboards, or at a small group table. The ball chairs and swivel stools can be moved to different locations and the purchase of floor desks will make it possible for students to work on the floor in a different position as well as in a small group focusing their attention on a teacher or aide. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. My students are more involved in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
