The concept of using books as "mirrors and windows" allows students to not only see themselves represented in stories (mirrors), but also allows them to have glimpses (windows) into other diverse characters and history makers. I have started a school wide calendar project featuring timelines and primary sources to highlight "history makers" across all racial groups so that our elementary students can learn about the contributions of so many individuals throughout the entire year. This project is meant to bring our school together in discussion and understanding of racial diversity.
