Many of the students in this classroom are diagnosed with social emotional disabilities. Providing multisensory instruction with the materials listed allows for them to learn through hands on, interactive approaches that target multiple senses, teamwork, and critical thinking, all within the same activity. Providing them with access to games, apps, and manipulatives further enriches their environment and increases their engagement in the lessons. After a difficult year enduring a shut down, seeing family and friends fall ill, witnessing racial injustice, experiencing peer isolation and months full of uncertainty, my students deserve to be able to rebuild their social skills through play with peers while targeting academic and behavioral learning objectives. The timers will allow for us to remain on task while in groups. Having flexible seating such as bean bags also helps the students take a break in a safe space to regain their attention, come back to the lesson ready to learn, and move on with their day.
