Students who participate in the social-emotional program need access to sensory material to help regulate their emotions throughout the school day. Once a week these students also participate in a module where they learn and practice new coping strategies. These materials will help students learn to become more independent in their emotional regulation. We hope to provide students with the skills to balance the rigor of academics and mental health throughout their lifetime. Students practice sensory skills that include the use of all 5 senses (touch, taste, hearing, smell, and sight) in order to regulate themselves when they are in a heightened emotional state. The use of sensory toys, weighted blankets, and snacks helps the students to distract themselves into a more logical state and reduce their emotional state.
