Online music learning presents many challenges, one being the lack of hands-on, instrumental play. Bringing ukulele's into the music classroom will give these students a chance to have that hands-on learning experience while they are learning at home and in person once a week. With each student having their own ukulele, they will develop ownership and responsibility as they mature and grow. They will also have the opportunity to build them and design the ukuleles themselves in art class, while learning about the Polynesian culture and the influence it has had on the art of Hawaii. Each instrument will unlock a new level of growth in music literacy, a greater knowledge of tuning, and the opportunity for creative composition. These students will grow stronger in their ability to read and write music as they learn to read chords and notes for the ukulele. This is a great way to transition them toward middle school and high school band and choir. Ukuleles are also tunable, which forces students to develop relative pitch in order to accurately tune their instruments. Finally, giving each student their own instrument will allow them for a greater comfort and security in developing their own music through composition. By providing ukuleles to my students, they will begin to see themselves as true musicians. This ownership of their musical success will increase their desire to learn and grow as a musician. Ultimately your support can give these students the opportunity to soar. Thank you!
