Students need a chance to hear about the world around them. Events are happening to students like them hundreds of miles away. Having my students have a chance to look at books that talk about racial issues that African Americans face can help them look at their own lives and see what they have in common. Having a class set of a current events magazine will help students realize that the issues they face, the emotions they are feeling, are ones that students elsewhere relate to. Students need a chance to see people that look like them telling their history. They need people that look like them to lead the way forward.
