I am a middle school art teacher looking to set up a robust clay program. We have a wheel and a kiln, but our tools, glazes, and clay are depleted. Advancing our clay program is impossible with my yearly supply budget, so Donors Choice to the rescue! Many art programs were cut last year due to Covid, but thankfully my administration fought to bring it back. Because of this, our students are a year behind in skills, and I know that ceramics is the best way for them to learn several creative skills at once. Clay engages students more than any other medium, and is also highly therapeutic - which these kids need after the emotional year they've had! I've had students who lost grandparents and other family members, had their parents lose their jobs, or are working harder than ever. As resilient as our kids have had to be through this pandemic, now is the time for us to help them heal and begin to work through all they have seen. Working with clay is a tactile, sensory experience. It provides an opportunity for students to be present as they work and manipulate the materials. Because clay is unpredictable, they learn patience, adaptability, and develop a growth mindset. Through their hard work, they begin to communicate, in a sense, with the clay. They work with the clay, not against it, and in turn learn the most valuable life lesson on finding joy: the way out is through. These supplies will allow students to learn to throw on the potter's wheel, the basics of clay construction (slab, coils, pinch pots), and create sculptures that they then can glaze and learn the firing process. Even more important, is what they will learn about themselves during the making process.
