A projector has become essential to any classroom. Students are constantly interacting with videos and online resources outside of school, making it imperative to bring those resources into our classroom as well. We can create and connect as a class by projecting dance-along videos, student compositions, and music-writing manipulatives. In Kindergarten and 1st grade, we dance along to a movement break activity. These activities divide the lesson and encourage students to refocus their energy for the remainder of the class. In 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, we listen to music from important artists such as Aretha Franklin, The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder. Students listen for musical elements that we have discussed in class and have the opportunity to apply those lessons to incredible music. By having a projector, we can watch demonstrations of instruments they hear and musicians they are learning about. In 5th and 6th grade, we compose in SoundTrap, an online music composition software that enables students to create their own musical themes. A projector would be beneficial in demonstrating new skills in the software, presenting student compositions, and working together as a class to create a class song. A projector is vital to learning in the 21st century. We will use it to connect with each other and with musicians all around the world.
