These hands-on learning activities will help my special needs students gain a deeper understanding of the basic educational foundations which they have not been able to learn through traditional teaching methods. All students have different learning styles and their own areas of strengths and weaknesses. It can be very frustrating if lessons are continually taught in a child's weakest learning style. Children learn more easily when they feel good about themselves, when they are actively engaged, and when they are having fun. Hands-on experiential activities utilize multiple senses instead of just one sense. Presenting lessons through a combination of visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and tactile modalities, creates more brain activity which facilitates better information processing. Word puzzles can help students make the connection between the printed letter and the sound of the letter. The word family flip cards make it easier for students to understand that changing the first letter of a word can make a totally different word. The story writing pictures and prompts help students stay focused and foster continuity and creativity. Hands-on math activities transform vague abstract concepts into practical concrete processes. School can be exhausting if students stay in a desk all day. The Soft Seat floor cushions give students a break from their desk and allow them to be more comfortable so they can pay better attention.
