Students will be learning poetry, along with culture from the African diaspora in my English language arts class. They will be able to use their knowledge in a study of The Poet Slave of Cuba to build speaking, reading and writing skills. The requested items will give our grade level a class copy of the award-winning book The Poet Slave: A Biography of Juan Francisco Manzano. However, a class set of this book will give students something even greater than literacy. It will give students the skills and courage to write their own untold stories. As the unit progresses, students will begin researching and submitting their work to various student writing competitions. The hope is to secure scholarships for their future education.
