Every year my students come to school excited to learn with tons of energy. Many of my students come from broken homes or stressful home situations and school is their only safe place. My first graders are high-energy and love to wiggle around the room to learn. My hopes are to implement flexible seating in my classroom this year. This will give my students a choice in seating during their independent work time and center time. Using flexible seating will allow my students to move around the room and find a comfortable work space. After many years of teaching, I have learned that this age group is very energetic and easily distracted if they are not comfortable. The amount of time spent sitting at a desk or table is very minimal. I believe their engagement and academics would increase if my classroom would have flexible seating by having options for them to sit and work that is their own space will be highly beneficial to their learning engagement. After last years covid restrictions, I would like to be able to offer my students a cozier classroom to walk into. Making sure students are comfortable and have a choice is an essential component in motivating them. If they make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
